The Power of Praise- 7 Hebrew Words for Praise

Dear Friends,

I'm prompted to write this post because recently my family has experienced a breakthrough by praising the Lord. In January of this year work wasn't consistent and money became tight. So tight in fact that we were forced to sell things. Thankfully we had items to sell and thankfully the Lord brought buyers. When we were in this valley, the weight of the situation started to loom. However every day on the way to work and back I would listen to the Praise channel (Channel 64) on Sirius radio and I'd get caught up in praising the Lord and professing victory over my life and my husband’s life. The power of the Holy Spirit was present and the feeling of obscurity subsided and destiny rushed in like a flood. I knew that I tapped into something my husband needed to get a hold of too. So the next moment that James and I had together I'd started to play gospel praise and worship music to push through this funky-down-and-out feeling.

The next Saturday I played 'Kirk Franklin and Family' on Pandora and starting singing and praising and dancing to the Lord and soon James was feeling it and joined in. The words of praise were powerful proclaiming the word of God and the promises that he has given us over our lives.  We were professing the victory that we have because of God's word and in that action of praise and proclamation was transcendent, and the atmosphere in our home changed. Furthermore, we started to win the battle in our mind. We realized that God has created us for victory and what we are in right now is going to go "bye-bye"- real quick. As a result we felt a complete breakthrough in the spiritual realm and soon we had complete victory in the natural. Weeks later the Lord blessed James with an amazing job with all that we wanted and more. To my friends who have been in the valley for far too long and want breakthrough this is for you. I'm sharing what I've learned so you too can tap into this victory too!

Just last week I was listening to the praise channel again, (OF COURSE, because when you experience the presence of God in worship, you don't want any other kind of music), and I heard a great song from the legendary gospel singer, Shirley Caesar, called "Worship Him". In that song Shirley started the song saying, there are seven different Hebrew words for the ways of saying Worship:

1. Yadah- (yaw-daw') cast out, make confession, praise, give thanks
A primitive root; used only as denominative from yad; literally, to use (i.e. Hold out) the hand; physically, to throw (a stone, an arrow) at or away; especially to revere or worship (with extended hands); intensively, to bemoan (by wringing the hands) -- cast (out), (make) confess(-ion), praise, (give) thank(-ful, -s, -sgiving).

“the extended hand, to throw out the hand, therefore to worship with hands extended”.
This word can be found in the following scriptures: Genesis 49:8, 2 Chronicles 8:14, Ezra 3:10, Psalms 22:22, Psalms 69:30, 2 Chronicles 7:6, Isaiah 12:4, Jeremiah 33:11, and 2 Chronicles 20:21

In short, YADAH is surrender to the Lord, yielding to Him with hands extended. To lift your hands unto the Lord. It carries the meaning of absolute surrender as a young child does to a parent - "pick me up, I'm all yours".  Scriptures: Gen. 29:35, 2 Chron. 7:6, 20:21, Psalms 9:1, 28:7, Psalms 33:2, 42:5,11, 49:18, Isaiah 12:1

2. Tehillah (teh-hil-law') praise, song of praise deep place, depth (A new song) and unrehearsed song from your heart. This can be done in the Spirit (tongues) or in the understanding.

You can TEHILLAH singing *Yadah, *Towdah & *Shabach combined. (read below for meanings)

The word tehillah is derived from the word “halal”. This word can be found in the following scriptures: Psalms 22:3, Psalms 33:1, Psalms 34:1, Psalms 147:1-2, 1Chronicles 16:35, 2Chronicles 20:22, Deuteronomy 10:21, Exodus 15:11, and Isaiah 61:3

3. Halal - (haw-lal') make boast self, celebrate, commend, deal, make, foolish glory, give light,
A primitive root; to be clear (orig. Of sound, but usually of color); to shine; hence, to make a show, to boast; and thus to be (clamorously) foolish; to rave; causatively, to celebrate; also to stultify -- (make) boast (self), celebrate, commend, (deal, make), fool(- ish, -ly), glory, give (light), be (make, feign self) mad (against), give in marriage, (sing, be worthy of) praise, rage, renowned, shine.

In another translation it means "to lose your mind"

David danced out of his clothes....he was Halal'ing God and I bet people thought he lost his mind!

4. Shaback- (Shaw-Bahk) “to shout, to address in a loud tone, to command, to triumph”.

This word can be found in the following scriptures: Psalms 63:1-4, Psalms 117:1, Psalms 35:27, Psalms 145:4, and Isaiah 12:6.

 5. Towdah-  (to-daw') (MY FAVORITE)  From yadah; properly, an extension of the hand, i.e. (by implication) avowal, or (usually) adoration; specifically, a choir of worshippers -- confession, (sacrifice of) praise, thanks(-giving, offering).

Towdah, To give worship by the extension of the hand in adoration or agreeing with what has been done or will be. This word is commonly found in connection with sacrifice-applying the giving of thanks or praise as a sacrifice before reception or manifestation. Thanking God for something that I don’t have in the natural. Agreeing with His Word – faith in His Word.

The powerful aspect about TOWDAH is the act of surrender and submission to God's authority. When you lift up the Lord and his word and praise him for being God, omnipresent, omniscient, sovereign Lord. The giver and the one that take away you are letting go of your situation and giving it to God.

"This form of praise goes in operation just because His Word is true. "Father, I thank YOU that YOUR WORD is TRUE. As we raise our hearts and hands in praise to the Lord, it involves a sacrifice, especially if one is very sick in body. The carnal mind would fight and ridicule this particular action, but there is great faith in TOWDAH as praise. The lifting of the hand symbolizes agreement. The right hand symbolizes my covenant with my my Father. As I go through the scriptures, God is seen extending His Right Hand to me. That's the covenant. When He extends His right hand to me, He's saying to me - ALL THAT I AM IS YOURS, and when I extend my right hand to Him, I am saying "All that I am is yours and I agree with what You're saying. It is the sacrifice that God honors by His performing of miracles.

The ATTITUDE for TOWDAH is: I'm thanking God. I'm agreeing with God that it is as He says. I don't care what it looks like. I'm agreeing with what His Word says. Example: Father, I thank You that I am healed." –from: http://www.tehillahword.com/7_types_of_praise

When offering a towdah to God, we are accepting His Word as truth just because we know that it is true. Here is a scriptural reference from Jeremiah 33:

Jeremiah 33

11 the voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the voice of those who will say:
“ Praise (towdah) the LORD of hosts,
For the LORD is good,
For His mercy endures forever”— (NKJV)

This passage says “I am praising (towdah) Him because He is good and merciful forever.” I give him praise because I am in agreement with these attributes of God and I find them to be true. This is enough reason to praise Him. Here is another example of agreement:

Isaiah 53:5
5 But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed. (NKJV)

Do you face adversity that is greater than you can bear alone? There is victory in His Word.

Philippians 4:13
13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. (NKJV)

Are you confused? Does life seem to make no sense?

Psalm 56

11 In God I have put my trust;
I will not be afraid.
What can man do to me?
12 Vows made to You are binding upon me, O God;
I will render praises (towdah)to You,
13 For You have delivered my soul from death.
Have You not kept my feet from falling,
That I may walk before God
In the light of the living? (NKJV)
I really felt the blessing of the Lord when we started to TOWDAH.

A few great things that David understood that touched the heart of God:
1.     He knew the sacredness of covenant, he made vows with the Lord and as a result knew those promises are sacred and he couldn't go back on his vow.
2.     David showed His faith in God’s word was greater than his circumstances.
3.     He stayed true to the Vision God had placed on his life. David knew that God didn't call him to be a slave but a King.

6. Barak- (baw-rak) to kneel; by implication to bless God (as an act of adoration)

Example: Psalm 95:6 -- "O come let us worship and bow down; let us kneel (BARAK) before the Lord our maker."

"Come let us throw ourselves at His feet in homage." [NEB]

"Let us bend thy knee in the presence of Jehovah our Creator." [Spurrel]

Other References: I Chron 29:20; Neh 9:5Job 1:21, Psalms 96:2, Psalms 103:1-2, Psalms 18:46, Psalms 95:6, Psalms 34:1, and 1 Chronicles 29:20.

7. Zamar (zaw-mar) properly, to touch the strings or parts of a musical instrument, i.e. Play upon it; to make music, accompanied by the voice; hence to celebrate in song and music -- give praise, sing forth praises, psalms.

This word can be found in the following scriptures: Psalms 66:2-4, 1 Chronicles 16:9, Isaiah 12:5, Psalms 27:6, Psalms 149:3, Psalms 30:4, Psalms 21:13, and Psalms 57:8-9.

Here's three extra Greek words for Praise too I've found but there is still more...

8 Agalliao (ag-al-lee'-as-is) (GREEK) means “(usually translated: “rejoice”) to jump for joy, to leap to exult”.

This word can be found in the following scriptures: Luke 10:21, 1 Peter 1:6, Revelations 19:7, and Luke 1:44.

9. Proskuneo (pros-koo-nay-tace')(GREEK) means “to prostate oneself in worship; to reverence, to adore; to kiss, like a dog licking his master’s hand”.

This word can be found in the following scriptures: Luke 4:8, Revelations 15:4, and John 4:24.

10. Thriambeuo (three-am-byoo'-o) (Greek) means “to make an acclamatory procession, to conquer, to celebrate a victory, to Triumph. This word is found in Colossians 2:15

So reading up on all of these words I realized when we were praising the Lord agreeing with His word we were TOWDAH’ing the Lord and not even knowing it.

Friends, there is deliverance and breakthrough in praise. If you need breakthrough and healing I encourage you to take time to do this.

Here’s one of my favorite songs to get you started…
